Rare Snow Is Cause For Celebration In Brazil
If it’s summer in North America, it’s winter in South America and everywhere else south of the Equator. But just like here, there’s no guarantee of snow, even in a mountain town like Gramado, Brazil. That’s where residents recently enjoyed a rare snow shower.
Gramado looks like an Alpine village in Bavaria. It was settled by Portuguese, German, and Italian immigrants in the late-1800s. It can get chilly there but the weather doesn’t truly matched that of the land which inspired the town’s aesthetic. Gramado is roughly 1,900 miles south of the Equator. Tampa, Florida is about the same distance from the Equator in the other direction. You don’t see much snow there either. So you can imagine the excitement over any amount of flurries in the Brazilian town, not that it takes much to put fun-loving Brazilians in a festive mood.
In a video posted on Twitter, you hear car horns honking, children screaming, and even the adults cheering for the snow. If you look closely, you might see someone dancing a samba. It’s almost as though Brazil won the World Cup or a celebration of the famed Carnival in Rio. I wonder if the kids got a day off from school. Sure, it was only a dusting but Charlotte kids have stayed home for even less.
