84-Year-Old Driver Admits He’s Never Had A License
A man driving in the UK was stopped by police recently. It was the first time he had ever been pulled over. He was born in 1938, which makes him 84. That’s impressive. What’s even more incredible is that the man told officers he had been driving with neither a license nor insurance for more than 70 years.
According to the BBC, the octogenarian said he had been driving without any of the proper documentation since 1950, when he was 12, and that he had never been stopped by police. In all those years, he has avoided accidents and any other vehicular infractions. That’s a long time to maintain a clean driving record. Well…not that clean. After all, he has been living a lie.
On Facebook, the Bulwell, Rise Park and Highbury Vale Police team said: “Thankfully he had never had an accident, caused anyone an injury, and never made anyone lose out financially, by hitting them whilst uninsured!” It’s not clear exactly why the man was pulled over, but that may have been his last day on the road.
This story reminds me of my father-in-law, Bob, who learned to drive while he was in the Army during the tail end of World War II. He was ordered to drive a supply truck from France to Germany. No one ever asked to see his non-existent driver’s license. When my father-in-law got back to the U.S. and applied for a license, the person at the counter asked him what he did in the war. Bob said that he drove a supply truck. That was good enough to get his license. My father-in-law never took a road test in his entire life.
