We’ve had some windy weather around here lately and we can expect more as winter turns into spring. One TV meteorologist has come up with a very relatable way to measure the gusts.
Brian Smith of WTVC Newschannel 9 in Chattanooga, Tennessee has created the “Where’s My Trash Can?” wind meter. It really paints a mental picture of how hard those gusts are blowing based on where your trash can ends up.
- 10-15 MPH Gusts – Little to no movement
- 15-25 MPH Gusts – Tipped over nearby
- 25-35 MPH Gusts – Neighbor’s yard
- 35-Plus MPH Guests – Down the street
SEVERE WEATHER THREAD:

Before storms arrive, expect gusty winds in excess of 30/40mph. This will be enough to topple some trees and cause power outages. The entire viewing area is under a wind advisory. A few showers are possible.
