The American Kennel Club has just released its annual ranking of the most popular dog breeds in America. One breed has held the top spot since 1991, the year I graduated from high school. Congratulations to the Labrador retrievers.

For the past 31 years, the Labrador retriever has been and continues to be the most popular dog breed in America. That’s an impressive streak. The AKC says, “The versatile, family-friendly Labrador retriever has solidified itself as America’s dog.”

Rounding out the top five are the French bulldog, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and the Poodle, which has regained a spot in the top five for the first time since 1997. The Poodle nudged the Bulldog out of the way to claim that fifth spot.
