Teens Earn $10k College Scholarships For Creating Duct Tape Prom Outfits
There’s nothing like getting $10,000 to put toward your college tuition for your prom dress or tuxedo. That’s exactly what happened to Grace Vaughn and Chidinma Onwuliri. Fox News reports the teens each won a $10,000 scholarship for making their prom outfits out of duct tape.
The “Stuck at Prom” contest is sponsored by Duck Brand. The rules state that the outfits had to be made from Duck Brand Duct Tape and/or Duck Brand Crafting Tape. One scholarship was awarded for the best duct tape prom dress and one for the best duct tape tuxedo.
Grace Vaughn, 17, won the prize for her black-and-white yin-yang dress design. She spent 143 hours and 45 rolls of duct tape creating the dress. It weighed 13 pounds when it was finished so, no, Grace didn’t actually wear it to prom. The Trinity, Florida resident hopes to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia, to study fashion design. Sounds like a good fit, pun intended.
Chidinma Onwuliri of Mississauga, Ontario, was the other winner. She spent 30 hours and 12 duct tape rolls to create an eye-catching pink tuxedo. Onwuliri grew up with an older brother and describes herself as a natural tomboy. She saw the contest as an opportunity to express a little of that masculinity with her feminine side in the design.
