‘Tales For Tails’ And ‘Furry Fridays’ Helping Shelter Pets In Gastonia
I’m a big supporter of rescues. I don’t always have the extra funds to help out, but when I do, I donate. Both my dogs, Kramer and Eddy, are rescue dogs and they’re the best! Kramer came from the Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement. Two awesome programs are happening at GCACE and you can get involved.
The ‘Tales for Tails’ is an amazing idea! It helps kids and shelter pets. It’s a reading program that happens one Saturday each month. GCACE will offer a morning reading session before they open up to the public. Books are encouraged to be brought from home. However, they will have a small selection in case you forget yours. This is a great way for kids to feel confident reading aloud and it’s a great way for kids to read more.
When I was teaching, the only homework I gave to the kids was reading. I asked them to read for 20 minutes a night. Reading and writing are so important for kids! If you’re interested in this program, you can sign up here. Hurry though because spots are limited.
‘Furry Fridays’ happen one Friday each month, and the classes will be held at the shelter in the evening. This month you can decorate dog bandanas for shelter pets to help them get adopted. Another fun program for kids and adults! Make sure to wear something you don’t mind getting messy! Sign up asap since spots go quick.
Right now, all the shelters in our area are full and in need of fosters and/or adopters. Adopt don’t shop! So many animals are in need of good homes. And I know times are tough for everyone, but if you can donate some items to GCACE’s new Youth Programs, please check out their

North Carolina City Is Ranked As One Of The Most Pet Friendly
It’s no secret we love our pets! They are family! In fact, did you know that there are over 90 million households with pets in the US? That’s a lot of pets and families who want them to live long, happy, and healthy lives. Can where you reside impact that? It just might! A recent study conducted by Wallet Hub ranked one North Carolina city as one of the most pet friendly. Think you know which one it is? I’ll give you a hint it has a vet school which probably contributed to such a high ranking on this list.
In 2021, pet ownership cost Americans $123.6 billion, according to the American Pet Products Association. Expenses add up fast between food, vet care, grooming, toys, boarding etc. Though if you love your pets the way I do there is no amount of money you wouldn’t spend on them.
With animal parents in mind, WalletHub compared the pet-friendliness of the 100 largest U.S. cities across 23 key metrics. Their data set ranges from minimum pet-care provider rate per visit to pet businesses per capita to walkability. Keep reading to see which North Carolina city ranked as one of the most pet friendly. You’ll see the top 20 and then below that where there the other three NC cities included are ranked. You can read WalletHub’s full study here.
