There’s One Spot In Your Kitchen You Should Be Cleaning More Often
We’ve all seen the stories on the news about how dangerous your kitchen can be because of all of the germs it harbors. “Tonight at 11, your countertops can kill you!” Well, it turns out it’s not just the countertops, sink, and cutting board you need to disinfect on the regular. There’s another, seemingly unlikely spot in your kitchen that can spread germs and cause illness, too.
According to News Nation, the unexpected kitchen item that could be the biggest culprit for spreading germs is your spice rack. A USDA study found that spice containers have some of the highest contamination levels for microbes and bacteria. That’s because they’re rarely cleaned, and often grabbed without properly washing your hands first.
I have to admit, I never would have guessed that, but it makes perfect sense now that I think about it. Anytime I cook, I’m touching lots of things in the kitchen, including raw ingredients, then reaching for those spices. Of course cross-contamination is a possibility!
Researchers say that cutting boards and trash can lids were also high on the list of contaminated items. Believe it or not, sink handles were among the cleanest. But I’d still watch out for those countertops.
