Get Cookies And Support Homeless Girl Scouts
This story really got to me two years ago. In 2021, a Twitter user named Chris Darden tweeted a post (below) about Girl Scout Troop 6000 in New York City. All of the girls in that troop live in homeless shelters. With Girl Scout cookie season here, the folks at Today have re-posted a reminder about these resilient and inspiring kids.
There are over 70,000 people living in New York City’s shelters at any given time and that means lots of children. Troop 6000 was founded in 2017 by Giselle Burgess, a single mother of five who lost her home. This troop meets weekly in over 20 shelters across all five of the city’s boroughs.
It’s amazing that with all of the challenges these girls face in their daily lives, they’re participating and thriving in scouting. You can give your support to the remarkable Girl Scouts of Troop 6000 by purchasing cookies from them online. All of the proceeds go toward the troop’s badge activities, uniforms, and field trips. Online ordering begins March 1st on Troop 6000’s website.
If you need Girl Scout cookies this year and don’t have a local troop to support, please consider buying from Troop 6000, which is entirely made up of girls living in NYC’s homeless shelters. https://t.co/ySvlUGaqmt
