North Carolina Zoo Welcomes The Birth Of Its Newest Resident
The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro has announced that their 13-year-old giraffe, Leia, gave birth to a baby boy on May 20th. According to WXII News, the first-time mom and her calf are both healthy and still getting to know each other out of public view.
The new giraffe entered the world at 6-feet tall and weighing 145 pounds. He’s on the tall and slim side. Giraffe calves are typically five to 6 feet tall and 150-200 pounds when born. But they get a lot bigger. Female giraffes can be up to 14 feet tall and weigh up to 1,500 pounds. Males can grow to be up to 18 feet tall and can weigh 3,000 pounds.
The North Carolina Zoo’s current giraffe tower, which is the term for a group of giraffes, includes females Leia and Amelia; and males Jack, Turbo, and the calf, who is the 13th giraffe to be born at the zoo. Jack is his father.
You can check the North Carolina Zoo’s social media accounts for giraffe calf updates, including how he will be named. Given his height and weight, I’d vote to name him “Stretch.” Or, since he’s the 13th giraffe to be born at the North Carolina Zoo, how about “Lucky?”
Surprise! 😍 This precious baby boy, born to first-time mom Leia and dad Jack, came into this world on Saturday, May 20, weighing 145 lbs. and standing about 6 feet tall. Leia and the calf are doing very well and will remain behind the scenes to continue to bond. 🦒 pic.twitter.com/kqyHyGV8Ml
