‘The Beanie Bubble’ Follows The Rise And Fall Of A Worldwide Obsession
Apple TV+ is getting ready to release The Beanie Bubble, a story that is inspired by the rise and fall of the iconic toy, Beanie Babies. According to IndieWire, the film features the talented pairing of Zach Galifianakis and Elizabeth Banks as the real-life inventors of the collectible stuffed animals.
A History of Hysteria
Every now and then, the public becomes fixated with something seemingly silly. Well, it’s not silly to the people behind the something. It’s their ticket to riches. In the 1970s, there was the Pet Rock. Advertising executive Gary Dahl came up with the idea of packaging a rock in a cardboard box with ventilation holes. He sold them for $4 a pop. Within six months, Dahl was a millionaire, and that was it for the Pet Rock.
The 1980s gave us Cabbage Patch Kids. I can still remember news reports of parents standing in long lines to buy the dolls during the holiday season in 1983. Cabbage Patch Kids lasted a bit longer than the Pet Rock and even enjoyed somewhat of a comeback in recent years.
In the 1990s, Beanie Babies ruled the world. The colorful stuffed animals started out as something fun for kids to play with and collect. Over time, however, people saw Beanie Babies as an investment and became obsessed with amassing them. In 1995, Beanie Babies were even called the world’s first Internet sensation. And then the bubble burst.
‘The Beanie Bubble’
The movie follows the saga of Ty Warner, played by Zach Galifianakis, the toy salesman who created one of the biggest toy crazes in history, and then shows what happens when everyone stops caring about them. Elizabeth Banks co-stars as Ty Warner’s business partner, Robbie, while Succession star Sarah Snook plays Warner’s wife, Sheila. Geraldine Viswanathan (Blockers) appears as a company employee who predicts the product’s downfall. Oh, and there’s a love triangle thing that happens along the way, too.
The Beanie Bubble will open in select theaters on Friday, July 21st. It’s set to premiere a week later (7/28) on Apple TV+. With a cast led by Zach Galifianakis and Elizabeth Banks, we can expect a lot of laughs, despite the troubles that befall the characters. Here’s the trailer:
