Taco Bell Is Celebrating The Liberation Of ‘Taco Tuesday’ By Giving Away Tacos
“Taco Tuesday” is back! For everyone. Legally. Because Taco John’s dropped its trademark on the term this year, other businesses are now free to use the already ubiquitous phrase. And “other businesses” includes Taco Bell.
Taco Bell released a statement saying, “Taco Tuesday belongs to all who make, sell, eat and celebrate tacos.” Amen! Wyoming-based Taco John’s held the trademark in 49 states for more than 40 years. A place in Somers Point, New Jersey called Gregory’s Restaurant & Bar is still holding onto their trademark in the Garden State, claiming that they invented the tastiest day of the week in 1979.
To celebrate the almost-universal liberation of “Taco Tuesday,” Taco Bell is giving away free tacos. According to USA Today, the fast food chain has announced that guests can receive one free Doritos Locos Taco every Tuesday from August 15th to September 5th. The offer is good at participating Taco Bell locations, as well as on delivery orders made through the Taco Bell app. No purchase necessary but the offer is limited to one taco per person per day, while supplies last. Delivery fees, taxes, and tip will still apply. In an Instagram post, Taco Bell is also teasing the “biggest Taco Tuesday” on September 12th. Hmmm…
In addition to letting the trademark go, Taco John’s donated $40-thousand to the non-profit organization Children of Restaurant Employees, which helps provide financial relief to restaurant workers with children. Taco Bell is also donating $1 million through their Taco Bell Foundation, which provides scholarships for employees and supports various non-profit groups. It’s a win-win-win all around!
