A Beloved Texas Fast Food Chain Could Be Coming To North Carolina
Charlotte-area burger lovers may have something new to sink their teeth into in the near future. According to WSOC-TV, that the Texas-based fast food chain, Whataburger, could be expanding into North Carolina.
I lived in Austin, Texas from 1997 to 1999. For most of that time, I was still a single, bar-hopping individual. Inevitably, a night out on the town would wind down with a trip to Whataburger. I remember their famous double-meat cheeseburger being a meal in itself, which probably helped prevent a hangover or two.
Whataburger opened its first fast food restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1950. The company is now headquartered in San Antonio. There are more than 900 Whataburger locations across Texas, Missouri, Kansas, the Southeast and Southwest. Currently, the closest ones to Charlotte are near Atlanta and Nashville.
By the way, this Whataburger should not be confused another similarly-named chain already in North Carolina. There are five What-a-Burger Drive-In restaurants in Kannapolis, Concord, and Mooresville. Those are also very good but are in no way related to the Whataburger from Texas. Hyphenation matters.
It’s possible that two locations of the Whataburger fast food chain could be coming to Charlotte. A franchisee has filed a development plan with the city to open one at the Clear Creek Crossing development on Albemarle Road. Last year, the Charlotte Observer reported that planning documents were also filed for a location off South Boulevard near Tyvola Road. I’m hoping for at least one!
