Petition Proposes Creating A National Holiday In Honor Of Jimmy Buffett
As Parrot Heads across the seven seas mourn the passing of Jimmy Buffett, a petition has been circulating on Change.org to create a national (or even world) holiday in honor of the late “Mayor of Margaritaville.” According to The Bama Buzz, the petition proposes that “Jimmy Buffett Day” fall on the Friday before Labor Day in the United States.
How would one celebrate Jimmy Buffett Day? Well, it would sort of be up to you. The petition states that individuals would have the opportunity to embrace their inner island spirit and choose how they want to celebrate. It reads: “Whether it’s dedicating their time towards helping others or our environment, or simply indulging in a day of relaxation with toes in the sand and favorite beverage in hand – everyone can find their own way to live life like Jimmy Buffett.”
So it can easily be a day to sip “Boat Drinks” on the beach and sing along with Jimmy’s songs, which you might be doing over Labor Day weekend anyway. However, it could also be an opportunity to do something meaningful for the world around you. Jimmy Buffett may have been the life of the party, but he was also a man of ideals. As a philanthropist and conservationist, he supported many worthy causes. According to the petition, some ways to commemorate Jimmy Buffett Day could include:
- Promoting Volunteerism
- Environmental Awareness
- Boosting Tourism
- Celebrating Cultural Diversity
- Enhancing Work-Life Balance
I’m sure that repairing blown out flip-flops and looking for lost shakers of salt would also be acceptable ways to spend Jimmy Buffett Day. If you like the sound of this holiday, you can read more and add your name to the petition HERE. Fins up!
