NASCAR All-Star Race Will Return To North Wilkesboro In May 2024
It comes as no surprise to NASCAR fans that the 2023 All-Star Race held at historic North Wilkesboro Speedway last May was a huge success. The sport needed a return to its roots and the North Carolina track is an important site in the storied past of stock car racing. NASCAR and Speedway Motorsports have announced that the NASCAR All-Star Race will return to North Wilkesboro Speedway for its 40th running as part of an exciting three-day weekend, May 17-19, 2024.
Opened in 1947, North Wilkesboro Speedway hosted its first NASCAR Cup Series race in 1949. Back then it was a dirt track. Over the next five decades, 93 Cup Series races were held there. NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon won the final NASCAR race at the track in 1996. Last May’s All-Star Race was the first Cup Series event at North Wilkesboro Speedway since then. Kyle Larson took home the $1 million prize and trophy.
Thanks to an $18 million dollar allocation of federal funds in 2021 designated for track improvements through the North Carolina state budget, and another $4 million grant from the state’s 2024 budget, various renovations have already been completed at North Wilkesboro Speedway. The 0.625-mile track will also be repaved for the first time since 1981. That will happen before the 2024 All-Star weekend.
According to NASCAR.com, the three-day weekend will begin with the NASCAR Pit Crew Challenge on Friday, May 17th. That will be followed by a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on Saturday, May 18th. The green flag will drop on the 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race Sunday, May 19th. More detailed schedules and information will come at a later date. Tickets go on sale October 5th with multi-day packages starting st $229.
