North Carolina Grandmother Sets Half Marathon Record At The Amazing Age Of 90
Think you’re too old to do something? It’s hard to keep telling yourself that lie when you read about someone like Dot Sowerby. According to Fox 8, the 90-year-old grandmother from Greensboro, North Carolina, has defied aging stereotypes by setting records as a runner. Despite not starting her racing career until the age of 50, Sowerby has earned over 150 medals from local, state, and national competitions over the years. And she’s still at it.
Dot Sowerby recently added another achievement to her mantle of accolades. The spry nonagenarian set an American record for her age group in the Life Time Chicago Half Marathon on September 24th. For the record, a half marathon is 13.1 miles. Dot also happened to be the oldest runner among the 10,000 participants in the race, finishing with an impressive time of 3:33:47. Wearing a sign made by her granddaughter that identified her as a 90-year-old, Sowerby received cheers and admiration from other runners and spectators. I would hope so.
How does Dot do it? It seems like a lot of it is has to do with her overall attitude and approach to life. It’s also about staying active and maintaining a healthy level of fitness. The Greensboro grandmother clearly thinks her best years are still ahead rather than behind her. Sowerby says people of all ages should keep moving. Every day, she runs, walks, swims, or takes an exercise class. Oh, and she breaks the occasional national record.
