Behind The Pizza: Chuck E. Cheese Animatronic Band Down To One Location
When the Beatles broke up in 1970, the world stopped turning for a moment. This news may not hit quite the same way but, for many ’90s kids, it might be close. USA Today is reporting that Chuck E. Cheese is retiring its legendary animatronic rock group, Munch’s Make Believe Band, from all but one of the “pizzatainment” chain’s locations.
With more and more acts, such as Adele and U2, opting for Las Vegas over the rigors of touring, this move isn’t all that surprising. The Chuck E. Cheese in Northridge, California will be the only place where Munch’s Make Believe Band will continue to perform. Think of it as a permanent residency.
Chuck E. Cheese officials say all other locations will have the animatronic icons removed. Munch’s Make Believe Band made its debut at Chuck E. Cheese locations across the nation in 1989 with the following lineup:
- Chuck E. Cheese – The chain’s spokesmouse is the lead singer of the band.
- Helen Henny – The chicken is he band’s other vocalist. She’s into gaming and Chuck, if you know what I mean.
- Mr. Munch – The purple space monster keyboardist will eat anything, especially pizza.
- Jasper T. Jowls – The bloodhound dog hails from Tennessee and plays a mean guitar.
- Chef Pasqually – The band’s Italian drummer is also quick with a joke. Boppity-boopity!
- Bella Bunny – The tambourine-playing rabbit was first introduced in 2018 and officially joined the band in 2020.
Over the years, the rock group has disappeared from many restaurants due to operational costs, vandalism, and renovations. The Northridge location will build an entertainment area around the attraction, including interactive dance floors and giant video walls, to keep the show going. The hundred of other U.S. and international Chuck E. Cheese locations will also be getting various upgrades.
I wonder if nostalgic ’90s kids will start making pilgrimages to Northridge, California to relive their “first concert” with Munch’s Make Believe Band. In the meantime, you can check out their YouTube playlist and a couple of their videos below:
