Teen Gives Up Christmas Presents To Adopt Dog, People Respond With Kindness
I love this story! And it’s perfect for this time of year. Phil and I both have rescued dogs and they’re wonderful. Rescuing a dog, or any animal, is a full time commitment. Some folks don’t get that, which is why shelters remain full. Although, a 15-year-old in Texas does get it, and she’s going viral for an awesome reason.
According to USA Today, Taryn Brooks was reading a post from the Humane Society of Wichita County about a dog named Eddie. Eddie is a mischievous dachshund mix. When Taryn read about the dog, she made a deal with her mom: if she could adopt Eddie, she’d be willing to give up some of her Christmas gifts. LOVE!
The Humane Society of Wichita County did an great job promoting Eddie. In the post they made on Facebook page, they say that ‘Eddie is an A**hole and hates other dogs.’ They also say he’s only ’17 pounds but thinks he can take on a Rottweiler.’ They go on in a hilarious way, describing the traits of Eddie. To be honest, if I saw this ad, I’d be all about Eddie too! O Of course, I have my own psycho, crazy Eddy so I’m good!
Bringing the pup home was exciting, and afterword, Taryn and her mom made a social media page to share his story. Eddie, although spunky, is quite a sweetie, and the young lady is loving him! Once Taryn’s story went viral, stranger’s really related to what she was giving up to have the dog. Messages started coming in from strangers, wanting to buy Christmas presents for the 15-year-old and her mom! Supplies have also be coming in from folks that Taryn can take donate to local animal shelters.
Eddie Is Getting Used To His New Home
Eddie is adapting well to his new home and already bonding with his new family. So far on social media, the pup has over 40,000 folks following him. Taryn is using Eddie’s story and social media page to advocate for animal shelters and she’s encouraging people to adopt instead of shop for a pet. Both Taryn and her mom are thankful for all the attention and gifts they’re getting. They’re also so thankful for people supporting them and sweet Eddie.
As much as I would like to see all the rescue animals in all our local shelters find forever homes, please think before adopting. So many people want a dog or a puppy, then realize after the fact that they are work and need attention. Recently, I was reading about a dog on Facebook that was returned to a rescue group. The person that adopted the dog wanted it euthanized because it ‘barks at other dogs’. True story! Please, and I’m begging, do NOT do things like this! If you aren’t able to commit to a dog for its lifetime or think a pet as just a ‘Christmas present’, please do not get an animal. I understand things happen and some pets need to be re-homed, but adopting an animal is a commitment. It’s not something you do on a whim.
It is truly heartbreaking that so many people get pets as ‘presents’ and then give the animal to a shelter once they realize it takes time and commitment. If you are able to love and take care of a pet, so many are available in Charlotte and the surrounding area. Kudos to Taryn for being mature enough to take care of Eddie at only 15-years old! I am sure that pup will have an amazing life! You can follow Eddie and Taryn’s story on the AHole Eddie Facebook page. Love it!
