‘Pool Beer’ Might Be Exactly What We Need To Beat The Late Summer Heat
Now that it’s September, some people might be tempted to think the weather is going to cool off. HA! Fools! This is the South. It could still hit 90 on Halloween so there’s plenty of time and need for ice cold refreshment. One late summer beverage that has been getting some love on social media is Pool Beer. No, it’s not beer made from recycled swimming pool water. It is, however, a simple and tasty way to quench your adult thirst on a hot day.
According to Punch, a Washington, D.C. restaurant and bar called Lulu’s Winegarden is preaching the gospel of the Pool Beer. The drink starts with shaved ice scooped into a pint glass and a lime wedge on the rim. Then a Tecate, Corona, Pacifico, or any lighter Mexican-style lager is poured over the ice shavings. The result is an instant beer slushy. The folks at Lulu’s say it HAS to be made with shaved ice, not crushed, in order to get the proper effect.
Pool Beer sprang from a possible misunderstanding. Lulu’s married co-owners, Paul and Brittany Carlson, were vacationing at The Phoenician, a resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. When the couple ordered beers by the pool, they were brought big cups of shaved ice with cans of beer on top. The cups basically served as small ice buckets to keep the beer cold in the 119-degree desert heat. But Paul and Brittany decided to pour the beer over the shaved ice, drop in the lime and, voila, the Pool Beer was born.
So whether you’re poolside, lakeside, or simply backyard-side, you may want to try a Pool Beer. After all, the pumpkin spice lattes will still be around in November, when the weather might actually start to cool down. Maybe.
