Moment with Mel: THIS Is Why I Don’t Date
Saturday night I finally ventured out of my house and met up with some friends at Amos in Charlotte to see an 80’s cover band. Now, I was a staple at Amos’ for years when I worked for the rock stations in town and introduced numerous bands there. And I’ve been going to the club since the 1990’s, when it was on Park Road, and I was in my 20’s. Oh how times have changed. The club was packed, too packed for me, and it cost $17 dollars to park! Hell, I remember when $17 was my bar tab! LOL! I had a good time but I’m definitely getting older, and my patience is thin. Not that it was ever that thick!
I think that’s what upset me when I saw this video on Twitter. My lack of patience made me angry. Now before I begin my rant, let me say that I realize that all men are not bad. Unfortunately, there are a lot of them out there. Dating as you get older is insanely hard, especially now. Everyone does online dating. I’ve tried it and it’s just not my thing. I probably don’t give it enough of a chance, but trying to weed through the wackos is exhausting. I’d rather just say home with my pups and watch ‘Seinfeld’ reruns.
This video COULD be fake, but the tone of the woman’s voice and the man’s makes me think it’s real. Here’s the setup: a young woman meets a man out for dinner. He’s familiar with the place. She decides what she wants to order, and he says he’d like to order for her. Apparently, he’s more familiar with the restaurant. Ok. He tells her he’s going to order the ribeye and mashed potatoes for them both.
The woman decides to order a glass of red wine, and the man says, ‘You don’t want wine.’ She asks if the wine isn’t good at the restaurant. He says, ‘Well, you don’t want to add on any calories, do you?’ Ummm…EXCUSE ME? The woman is polite, and the man says he’ll order something that will ‘suit’ what she’s looking for. Immediately, as a woman, my face gets red because it’s obvious this dude is controlling. My face would show my annoyance, but this young lady held it together.
Then this dude goes on about how he ‘knows what women like’ and tries to talk himself up. Must be why he’s single. When the waitress arrives to take their order, the woman begins to order for herself and the man interrupts her, ordering for her. When the woman decides to order soup as well, she asks the guy, ‘Is that okay?’
Not sure when this happened in the date, but the woman goes to the restroom and has a few things to say on camera. NSFW language used but in the right context! You then see her face as she’s back at the table, and she looks miserable.
As the meal is finished, the woman says she wants to pay for her meal, and he gets offended. She tells him that she’s had an experience like this before and she doesn’t want a repeat. Basically saying, in a nice way, I don’t wanna see you again dude. Then this guy says, in a threatening voice, ‘You WILL NOT embarrass me.’ Apparently, he’s unhappy that she wants to pay for her meal. Hearing the tone in his voice, I can almost bet you this guy has quite a temper. Without question he’s extremely controlling! And the sound of his voice is like something out of a true crime show!
I don’t know this woman, but she handled herself beautifully. She was polite, and towards the end of the date, she just wanted to get away from this guy. Thank goodness she met him at the restaurant and didn’t ride with him! I have a feeling this guy is handsy and doesn’t like the word no.
This man is lucky he was out with a nice girl, because someone like me would have left when he made the calorie comment. Now I know all dates aren’t like this, but this is what it’s like for many women on dates. It’s freakin’ scary!
Check out the video for yourself. I’m sure there are many people that have experienced dates like this. It’s amazing to me that this guy thinks he’s so stellar that he can say anything to a woman. I’m not a therapist but I’m betting this guy has a lot of short comings. And doesn’t like women all that much. Be safe out there!! Always make sure someone knows who you’re with and where you’re going. Using a friend as an escape is always a good option!
