Small Town High School Has Two Graduating Seniors In Class Of 2023
You gotta love a small town. Traffic is generally lighter. Most folks know one another. They look out for one another. And an event like a high school graduation doesn’t take nearly as long as it would in a bigger city.
The Lafourche Gazette reports that the Grand Isle School in Grand Isle, Louisiana, held its high school graduation ceremony for the Class of 2023 on Monday, May 15th. The 2023 Class Officers are Alayna Otten, President, and Shelby Lemoine, Vice President. Alayna and Shelby were also the entire Class of 2023.
That’s right. Grand Isle School had two seniors in its entire graduating class. Obviously, Grand Isle is a tiny town. According to the 2020 Census, the town’s population was only 1,005. The beach community sits on a narrow barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a 107-mile drive south of New Orleans and takes a little over two hours to get there.
This year’s graduating class of two was a significant drop off from last year. According to NOLA.com, Grand Isle School’s Class of 2022 had a whopping six seniors receiving their diplomas. That ceremony must have taken a solid 15 minutes!
Just because they were small in number didn’t mean that Alayna and Shelby was short on school spirit. The Class of 2023’s motto was inspired by Julius Caesar: “We came. We saw. We conquered!” And my favorite part of this story is that the class song was “Just the Two of Us” by Grover Washington, Jr. and Bill Withers.
