Firehouse Singer C.J. Snare Passes Away
If you’re an 80’s and early 90’s rock fan, then you know the band Firehouse. And if you’re a Gen X’er that grew up in or around Charlotte, then you also know the band. Friday, April 5, lead singer and founding member of the band C.J. Snare passed away at age 64.
The band formed in Virginia in 1984 but moved to Charlotte prior to signing to a record label. Since they became major stars after moving to Charlotte, they’ve always been known as a North Carolina band. In the late 1980’s, before signing to Epic Records, I used to go to the 4808 Club in Charlotte to see Firehouse. A friend of mine was ‘seeing’ C.J., so we’d get into the club and have drinks despite being underage. I always thought it was so cool that we were hanging with a band! Oh, how I miss those fun days!
In 1989, after the band was signed to Epic Records, they went on to become major stars in the early 1990’s. The band’s self-titled debut album Firehouse came out in 1990 and put the band on the rock-and-roll map. The album sold over two million copies in the United States alone. Four singles, “Shake & Tumble”, “Don’t Treat Me Bad”, “All She Wrote” and the massive power ballad “Love of a Lifetime” were big radio hits.
In addition to having some kick-ass songs, all of the guys in the band were gorgeous with amazing 80’s hair. Not that has anything to do with their musical skills, but it did help in making the band extremely popular with women.
Rockin’ After The Big Hair Days
Firehouse is one of the bands that was not only successful here in the U.S., but also overseas. The band toured consistently in the 90’s and in the 2000’s. They are a fixture on the Monsters of Rock Cruise, and the band played on the 2024 cruise that I was on. C.J. was not with the band as he was recovering from surgery.
In 2020, C.J. was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer. According to his girlfriend Katherine, his prognosis wasn’t great, but that didn’t stop him from fighting. He had surgery in 2021, and subsequently underwent another surgery in the fall of 2023. The last surgery left him weak, and he passed of cardiac arrest on April 5.
I share this info because I know his girlfriend, and she needs our prayers as does the rest of his family. I also share because I know I’m not the only fan of the band. I didn’t know C.J, I only met him a few times in the late 80’s when I was a teen. But I know the bands songs are a part of many Gen X’ers memories.
Realizing that we’re all getting older, it’s still a bummer when musical artists we grew up listening to pass away. I can’t tell you how many times my girlfriends and I sang along to ‘Don’t Treat Me Bad’ in the early 90’s. I was 20 years old in 1990 and Firehouse was all over the radio and MTV then.
The band’s tunes were the soundtrack to many good times for lots of us! Sending lots of love and strength to the Firehouse members, and C.J.’s loved ones. Celebrate C.J. and the band by checking out the video below. If you’re like me, you still know all the words!
