Fallen Charlotte Police Officers Honored During Wells Fargo Championship Trophy Presentation
The week prior to the Wells Fargo Championship, the Queen City endured one of its darker days in recent memory. Four law enforcement officers were killed in a shooting while attempting to serve a warrant at a home in East Charlotte. Their lives and memory were honored during the Wells Fargo Championship Trophy Presentation.
Prior To The Wells Fargo Championship Trophy Presentation
It was a beautiful day Sunday at Quail Hollow Club. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, the temperature hovered just under 80 degrees, and it was Mother’s Day. In a word: perfect.
From a golf fan’s perspective, it was pretty good too. Rory McIlroy is one of the finest golfers in history. He’d already won The Wells Fargo Championship three times (including his first win on the PGA Tour in 2010). He’s been a Charlotte fan favorite ever since. On Sunday he notched his fourth title in the Queen City and 26th overall on the PGA Tour. However, the best was yet to come.
The Wells Fargo Championship Trophy Presentation
Johnny Harris is the man in charge at Quail Hollow Club. He is also a long-time member of Augusta National Golf Club, home of The Masters Tournament. Like The Masters, The Wells Fargo Championship always has an outdoor trophy presentation where a club jacket (in this case, blue instead of green) and a trophy are given to the winner. This year’s was a little different.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief, Johnny Jennings arrived by helicopter. In his full dress blues, he emerged with the trophy for McIlroy. In light of the events of the prior week, this was indeed a classy and very poignant moment. Also, it was announced The PGA Tour made a $125,000 donation to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Foundation in honor of the fallen four officers.
According to WCNC, Jennings related in a social media post, “This tournament is something our department looks forward to each year and we appreciate the continued support of our law enforcement members,”
