Man Rescues Baby Squirrels, Writes Adorable Children’s Book
A man in California rescues some baby squirrels and writes an amazing book about his interaction with the animals. I love this story since I love animals! Lots of us are all about animals but there are so folks that are truly ‘animal whisperers’. I’m not one of those people, but my mom is. Stray animals just seem to find her. There’s a gentleman in California that is one of these special people. His name is Derrick Downey Jr., and last year he rescued four baby squirrels.
Seeing his videos on Instagram led me to follow Downey Jr. I was amazed at what the man did for this family of squirrels. Last August, some tree trimmers were cutting down some trees and they displaced a squirrel nest. They workers saw the baby squirrels and put them on a tree. Unfortunately, the tree was near a sidewalk where dogs walk, and Downey Jr. was concerned the babies would be hurt or killed. So, he took all four of them, with the nest that was cut down, and brought them into his home.
Seeing the squirrels were hungry, Downey Jr. went shopping and hand fed the babies with a syringe. He soon realized the babies belonged to a squirrel named Maxine. I’m not sure of how long he’s been doing it but Downey Jr. has been feeding squirrels that are living near his home. He’s built a trusting relationship with the animals, and he’s named them. One of them, Maxine, is the mother of the baby squirrel’s he rescued.
Rescue Squirrels Kids Will Love
This amazing animal whisperer is not only feeding the squirrel’s he’s set up a mic for the squirrels so that he can create hilarious videos! ‘Hood Rat Raymond and Richard’, Maxine, and Consuela are a few of the local squirrels in the videos on Instagram. It’s wild that Downey Jr. knows each squirrel! In addition to the funny videos, Downey Jr. is sharing inspirational messages with the squirrels and all of his followers. All of us can benefit from these videos as we all have days when we are doubting ourselves and our lives.
I haven’t watched all the videos but what I have seen is nothing short of amazing! This man truly is a gift to animals! After rescuing the babies and figuring out that Maxine was the mama, Downey Jr. reunited the family. Now, in addition to the squirrels that already were visiting him, he now has Maxine’s babies beginning to visit. It’s the cutest thing!
