Amazingly Smart Orangutan Tells Zoo Visitor Exactly What He Wants
Animals are amazing! I’m always intrigued by the behaviors of some wild animals. It’s mind boggling how smart they are. A couple at a zoo found out how smart an orangutan is when it really wanted something from them. This is one of those videos where you put your hand over your mouth in awe while watching it.
According to MSN, a couple was visiting the Louisville Zoo and they stopped to see the orangutans. As they were standing behind the glass, Amber the orangutan came over to them. She began using hand signals to ask the woman for something in her bag. Amber begins pointing at the woman’s bag, so she holds the bag closer to the window for the animal to see. Continuing to point at the bag, the animal is persistent.
The couple stand there chatting, as the woman pulls things out of her bag to show to the animal. Finally, the woman pulls out a snack from her bag and the animal signals that THAT is what she wants. The woman then unwraps the snack and holds it up to the glass for Amber to see.
Amber then motions for the couple to come to the end of the glass window. She points, letting them know that they need to come around to the fence to give her the snack. Obviously, the couple is unable to go to the fence since the zoo is secure and employees only are allowed in the area in which Amber is pointing.
Figuring out that the couple can’t give her the snack in that way, Amber then grabs a stick, climbs the fence, and begins poking at the top of the enclosure. The orangutan is using the stick to try and pry open the spot between the glass window and her enclosure so she can access the snack. It’s amazing!
Orangutans are among the smartest non-human primates. It’s wild to watch Amber exhibit behaviors as a small child would when it wants something. The animal is making her want of food so clear. And she’s so crafty! It’s such a cool thing to see!
